Well hi everyone! Despite our best efforts to be as summer-lazy as possible, Canes Domain does – at least in body – still exist.
I awoke from my sun-burnt summer coma last week and realized… hockey season is only a few short weeks away. I should probably see if I still remember how to write. It’s taken me about twenty minutes to pen this intro so the jury is still out.
In all seriousness, it feels great to hammer away at the keyboard once again. Curious about what the summer has been like? Maybe want to know a little about what the future has in store for Canes Domain?
Here’s a monkey on the beach – oh – and long overdue Canes Domain summer update.
Well… there’s no other way to put it – this site has been a ghost town since the end of the Canes’ season. As the site founder, that’s something that largely falls on me so let me start by apologizing for the lack of content or general updates.
The truth is I was immensely burnt out this Spring. After the Regina Pats walked into town and sealed the deal with a (somewhat convincing) series win – I was finally able to take a breather and focus on something aside from work and the site. It had been ten months of writing, researching, and graphic design… all done daily after finishing my big boy day job.
In the excitement of the Canes return to the playoffs, I wrang out the last few drops of energy and did my best to step up the coverage. It was an amazing two weeks. The site numbers exploded and the interaction on Twitter was incredible! Thank you fans for making this “job” as fun as it is.
As great as the last push was, I really needed a break. As it turned out, I needed a long break – probably longer than I had initially envisioned. Between catching up on personal things, taking a breather, and juggling some significant life changes, there just hasn’t been much time for hockey.
Even though I haven’t been focusing on the site, I’ve been incredibly busy! The summer has been a blur. Between boating, camping, Stampeding, folk festing, general beer drinking, and getting back into the gym (too many Enmax winter ale’s), the summer of 2016 has been unforgettable.
I even climbed a 9,600 ft mountain with some long time friends! How about that!
During my summer adventures, I happened to bump into a handful of ‘Canes – all of whom said they were doing well and were very excited about the upcoming season.
It won’t be long before the whole crew is back in town and the sounds of skates and pucks once again reverberate throughout the Enmax.
So what’s next?
That’s a great question.
The good news is I am feeling refreshed and reinvigorated for another season. I’m hoping to rally the Canes Domain troops in the coming days and start to outline a plan for the future. The challenge is to continue to improve the site and the content. My goal for Canes Domain in 2016-2017 is to continue to expand our coverage and to become more sustainable.
What does that look like?
That’s something I’m still working out.
For now, just know that we love this team, this fan community, and we are determined to keep pushing forward!
To that end, if you are interested in this site and have an interest in some form of involvement for 2016-2017, now would be a good time to drop us a line. Head over to the “Join the Team” page to get a better idea of what we’re searching for.
Look for things to slowly ramp up here on the site as we start closing-in on rookie camp.
Until then, enjoy your remaining summer days and remember to hit us up on Twitter or Facebook.
Before I go, I also just want to take a second to say an earnest thank you to those who’ve been checking in on the status of the site. The Twitter comments and questions about the coming season and the continued affirmation of Canes Domain is incredibly humbling and I am honoured by the support for the site. While it is a massive amount of work, the Hurricanes fan base makes it all worthwhile and I just wanted to make sure you know how much your continued interest and support means.
Thanks again for tuning in!
