Funny how the summer always seems to fly by. The rookies hit the ice next week! Hurricanes hockey is just around the corner and I wanted to take a quick peek into the coming season. It only seems fitting to examine a few reasons fans (and management) should be excited about the coming season.
With the foundation the players and coaches were able to establish last season, it’s not hard to be optimistic about the outlook for the coming hockey season. The team is on solid footing and the players ought to be returning with gleeful energy and confidence. The Hurricanes are a good team and there’s no reason this group shouldn’t once again be competing as one of the best in the Eastern Conference.
Without further ado, I present to you five reasons Hurricanes fans should be excited for 2016-2017.
As much fun as it is to dissect 72 hockey games, it’s also great to occasionally take a step back and enjoy the finer things in life (or in this case, hockey). If you’ve been around the site for any length of time you will have noticed that we often use digital renders of jerseys from around the league in a our pregame previews. It’s a fun little graphic design project I started working on at the inception of this site. So far, I have about half of the league finished. Each jersey takes around an hour to create, and some, particularly the more “modern” designs, are more complicated than others.
While I am lagging behind on the Western Conference, I have much of the East done, and all of the Central. Since the Hurricanes are fighting for the regular season Central Division crown, I thought it would be fun to do our own little race to the playoffs here on Canes Domain. I have put together graphics for all six teams in the central to feature their primary jerseys (perhaps we will add 3rds in the future… for now this is all we have finished).
Your job, should you choose to partake, is simply to look through and, as objectively as possible, vote for your favorite kit at the bottom of the page. Unfortunately it’s not a 1-6 rank style ballot, so you only get to cast one vote (for your favorite). Seeing as we are Canadians (hello to our American visitors too), a “First Past the Post” system is as good as we’ve ever known and it will have to do.
Along with the graphics, we’ve also included some historical information on each franchise via numerous wiki pages and other tidbits found across the internet. If you have other information pertaining to a specific design then drop a comment and I will update the article.
With all that out of the way, enjoy the graphics and make your vote count!
Hooray for democracy.

Let’s get a few things out of the way before we dive into this game. The Ice are having an abysmal year and injuries are a big part of it. Tonight they only dressed 15 skaters… one of them got injured and didn’t return after the 1st period. So while I would like to sing the praises of the Hurricanes, let’s keep in mind who they were playing against. I mean that with all due respect. Facts are just facts. The Ice were fighting an uphill battle, and honestly, I give them credit for their game tonight.
All that out of the way, the Lethbridge Hurricanes did exactly what they needed to do. They feasted (especially late) on a tired, hurt, and downtrodden team to get a crucial two points. The Canes took care of business so to say. BTO would be proud.
It just so happens that the Rebels also buckled down and secured a regulation victory this evening. The upward pressure from Sutter’s crew makes the triumph over Kootenay all the more meaningful.
It’s all on the line come Friday and Saturday night.
“Love Hurts”, “Hair of the Dog”, “Holy Roller”, “This Flight Tonight”… Nazareth is a legendary 70’s-80’s band. The mid 70’s… we’re talking about a band at it’s zenith – at the ‘height of their powers’ if you will.
Last night I was on 110% Podcast’s “Hurricanes This Week” and I made a huge mistake. No – it wasn’t a wild opinion or controversial comment… it was worse. I mistook Nazareth for Judas Priest. I could try to explain… I mean, Judas knew Jesus… and Jesus was a Nazareth boy, but, I’ll accept defeat and just kindly walk away with my head hung low.
Preview after the break…

I’m not sure where to begin. I guess I will start by saying this has been one of, if not the most fun piece to put together for Canes Domain since we started last April. I had the pleasure of catching up with a good friend and ex Cane Craig Orfino on Thursday evening via Skype. The end result was a lengthy podcast (our first ever) and a partially complete transcription of said-interview. I chose not to transcribe the entire thing because it would take too long and be far too long to read.
You can find the podcast inside the article, and for those who prefer to read, you can read my edited-down version of the many questions I asked as well.
The transcribed content is probably less than 1/4 of what we actually talked about so I highly encourage you to find the time to listen to the podcast in it’s entirety. For those of you who can’t, enjoy the read! It was a pleasure to do this and I hope you enjoy the content.
As always, if you like it, please share, comment and/or give us a follow on Twitter.
Without further ado, I give you, Craig Orfino: Memoirs of a Grinder.
